STEP 1 : oil stain test

A drop of oil heated to 250°C (a temperature of segmentation operating conditions) is put on special absorbent paper and placed in an oven. The shape, colour and spread of the stain on the paper provide information on:
- residual dispersivity of the lubricant
- fouling of the engine
- state of oil oxidation
- presence of any water or fuel oil

This test provides information:
- on the oil's residual capacity to disperse deposits
- to assess the concentration of carbon in the oil
